Over 90% of North Americans exceed the recommended intake limit for added sugars. This webinar, hosted jointly by IAFNS and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, focuses on the role of low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) as a tool for reducing intake of added sugars. This webinar will review what is meant by an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for food additives which include LCS, and why it confers protection. Speakers will address approaches for evaluating nutrition research studies that examine LCS and the translation of this information for practice. The AACE perspective on LCS as a dietary management tool will be presented. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists.
Speakers:
Njwen Anyangwe, PhD
Toxicologist, US Food and Drug Administration
Brij Makkar, MBBS, MD, FRCP, FACP, FACE
Diabetologist and Obesity Specialist, AACE Obesity & Nutrition Disease State Network Member
Jennifer van de Ligt, PhD
Senior Consultant, ToxStrategies
Deepa Handu, PhD, RDN
Senior Scientific Director, The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
Moderator:

This webinar is approved for 1 CEU by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Over 90% of North Americans exceed the recommended intake limit for added sugars. This webinar, hosted jointly by IAFNS and Diabetes Canada, focuses on the role of low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) as a tool for reducing intake of added sugars. Diabetes Canada has developed a position statement that emphasizes the urgent need for strategies to reduce the intake of added sugars by Canadians, especially those with or at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and recognizes that LCS are one viable tool available for added sugars intake reduction.
This webinar will also review what is meant by an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for food additives which include LCS, and why it confers protection. Results of a scoping review of the nutrition literature and the application of the ADI for LCS in that body of work will be presented. Speakers will address how the ADI can be used in nutrition research related to LCS, how to move toward a systematic approach for evaluating LCS intakes in nutrition studies, and the translation of this information for practice. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists.
