The Committee seeks to develop and communicate the science related to how the consumption of LNCSs can contribute to overall health and wellness.
To carry out this mission, the committee focuses on four areas:
- The role of LNCSs in taste perception and food choices.
- The physiologic and metabolic effects of LNCSs.
- The role of LNCSs in health and disease.
- Research approaches and study designs to investigate effects of LNCSs in the diet.

There has been an emerging concern that non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) can increase the risk of cardiometabolic disease. Much of the attention has focused on acute metabolic and endocrine responses to NNS. To examine whether these mechanisms are operational under real-world scenarios, we conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis of acute trials comparing the effects of non-nutritive sweetened beverages with water and sugar-sweetened beverages in humans.
The Challenge of Measuring Sweet Taste in Food Ingredients and Products for Regulatory Compliance: A Scientific Opinion

AOAC INTERNATIONAL formed the Ad Hoc Expert Panel on Sweetness in November 2020 to review human perception of sweet taste, assess the landscape of internationally recognized analytical and sensory methods for measuring sweet taste in food ingredients and products, deliver recommendations to Codex regarding verification of sweet taste requirements for FUF, and develop a scientific opinion on measuring sweet taste in food and beverage products beyond FUF.

A scoping review and evidence map were completed to characterize the research investigating dietary sweetness and body weight. The aim is to identify and map studies that investigate total dietary sweetness, sweet food/beverage, sugar, or sweetener intake and body weight-related outcomes.
