Scientific Integrity: How Can Science Overcome the Current Environment of Distrust?
Sunday, October 21st
3:30 PM – 5:00 PM
East Salon ABC

As a renowned scientific professional society, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes the importance of scientific integrity to its members and to the public’s trust in science. Therefore, the Academy participated in a Scientific Integrity Consortium, representing four United States and three Canadian government agencies, 11 professional societies, six universities, and three nonprofit scientific organizations. The Consortium was assembled to develop a set of principles and best practices for scientific integrity. This session will summarize the principles and best practices and give context to their development. The session will also present findings from a retrospective cross-sectional study aimed at identifying opportunities for improvement in food and nutrition research by examining risk of bias domains defined by the Cochrane Collaboration (Selection, Performance, Detection, Attrition, and Reporting). Variables studied included publication year, research type, and specific design, funder, and overall quality rating.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the principles and best practices for scientific integrity recommended by a Scientific Integrity Consortium and utilize case studies to apply the principles and best practices in your career.
  • Summarize the importance of keeping scientific integrity relevant in changing environments.
  • Address and identify opportunities for improvement in food and nutrition research using risk of bias (ROB) domains, particularly the Selection, Performance, and Detection ROB domains.
