Conflict of Interest Summit

Washington, DC, USA
June 16, 2015
National Academy of Sciences

In order to achieve broader adoption of the 12 principles published by ILSI North America for best practices in the initiation, development, and operation of research public-private partnerships in Nutrition Reviews in October 2013, a meeting of federal agencies and nutrition, food science, and food safety professional societies was held in December 2014 at the ILSI North America offices. The consortium used the ILSI North America set of principles as a foundation for the discussion, which are a synthesis of the best practices of professional societies, health organizations, foundations, government, and research institutes. ILSI North America partnered with the American Society of Nutrition (ASN) and USDA to convene this consortium.

A public unveiling was held at the National Academy of Sciences on 16 June 2015 of the set of principles for research public-private partnerships that were agreed upon and endorsed by 4 federal agencies and 5 nutrition, food science, and food safety professional societies. The USDA Under Secretary and Chief Scientist, Dr. Catherine Woteki, presented the keynote address, The Value of Public-Private Partnerships to Research, and the Institute of Medicine Senior Scholar and Executive Director of the IOM Roundtable on Value & Science-Driven Health Care, Dr. Michael McGinnis, provided a call to action to universities and the scientific community. The principles were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in June 2015 and an excerpt of the article appeared in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Journal of Food Science, Nutrition Reviews, and Nutrition Today.

More information and the presentations from the June Unveiling event can be found on the ASN website.
